The question of how to deal with limited, dwindling resources is currently a highly charged topic in the context of the climate crisis and the war in Ukraine. Sustainable and resource-conserving activity is one potential strategy for facing challenging developments in the long term. The Berlin Municipal Galleries Working Group has put together a conference to explore the topic, particularly the question of sustainable curatorial and artistic practices in concrete terms, and to offer a networking opportunity to local stakeholders from a variety of cultural institutions.
The conference highlights relevant and actionable options for curatorial work and exhibition practice, featuring interdisciplinary approaches and a range of perspectives from participating artists, curators, and academics.
Lectures, workshops, and a panel discussion will focus on different dimensions of sustainability and explore the following core questions: How can art and cultural workers — especially in the municipal sector — shape their work in a sustainability-conscious way? How can our carbon footprint be reduced? What are the positive influences on human ecology (work culture, the social and cultural relationships of organisations)? How do we adapt our organisations, practices, and work culture to new sustainable conditions?
The focus will be on discussing practical curatorial and technical strategies to achieve sustainable exhibition design and a reduction in operational resources in the lead-up to winter.
