Der Beifang (The Bycatch) is a presentation of works on paper from the artist’s private collection spanning the past 25 years. “Working on paper,” says Neo Rauch, “is always a refreshing change. They are actually paintings on paper, so in that sense, not drawings. I can never stay away from taking a painterly approach.” (Neo Rauch im Gespräch mit Ralph Keuning, in: Neo Rauch. Handlauf. Neues und Nachgereichtes, Leipzig 2020, p. 78).
The exhibition features large format pictures, which, like Rauch’s canvas paintings are highly developed in colour and composition, as well as a selection of smaller pieces that are an example of a lesser-known area of Neo Rauch’s artistic oeuvre. Though they are looser in style and more straightforward in setting, they are hardly any less enigmatic. These pieces are not studies, though some of the motifs recur in larger dimensions on paper and canvas pieces. The same is largely true for the third aspect of this very private exhibition: partly sketch-like, partly meticulous drawings from the studio.
