Journey through Art: Der Erste Deutsche Herbstsalon

Gallery owner Herwarth Walden made a big promise to prospective visitors before the opening of his exhibition on September 20, 1913. “The First German Autumn Salon will give an overview of the new movements in the pictorial arts of all countries.” And indeed, the “First German Autumn Salon” exhibition at Der Sturm gallery was ultimately one of the most important art events of the twentieth century and continues to shape art scholarship to this day. The exhibition featured well-known, celebrated, and long-since forgotten artists of all genders from Alexander Archipenko to Carlo Carrà, Gabriele Münter to Marianne von Werefkin and Ortiz de Zárate.
