Tarabya Culture Academy – an artist in residence program in Istanbul run by the German Foreign Office and the Goethe Institut — celebrates its tenth anniversary with a multidisciplinary festival in Berlin in September and October 2021.
Central to the festival is a two-month exhibition of works by Tarabya alumni and Turkish artists at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien. Thematically, the works in the show by participants in the Istanbul residency program deal with the close current and historical lines of connection between Turkey and Germany. Different migration movements from Turkey to Germany and vice versa, sixty years of the Germany-Turkey Recruitment Agreement and associated discourses on cultures of memory, belonging, and representation will all be discussed in the context of the exhibition and the festival, as will the situation of women’s rights in the wake of Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention.
